Rustic Spain
![]() |
A very competitively priced itinerary for those who enjoy a more 'grass roots' style of accommodation. Most nights will be spent in very pleasant local Hostals/Hotels in shared rooms for 2. We will also spend 1 night at a basic rural Albergue and another night in a mountain refuge, both in dormitory accommodation This week will be spent exploring the valleys and foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in sunny Andalucia Sample Itinenary:Arrive on Saturday and stay in Hostal/Hotel in Trevelez, Spain's highest village. Sunday we will settle in by doing a day walk in the local area and take the opportunity to explore the beautiful valley of the Rio Trevelez. A second night is spent at our accommodation in Trevelez. On Monday we pack just enough for an overnight stay at a rural Albergue in a delightful setting, this is dormitory accommodation, very basic with toilets with an 'Al Fresco' ambiance. It does have a hot shower, self-catering facilities and is only 5 minutes walk from civilization and a very nice Hotel restaurant ! Next morning we leave our rural idyll and descend in to the hidden world of La Taha. This charming collection of Pueblos Blancos in the depths of the valley of the Rio Trevelez gives some enchanting scenery. We will pass through villages where nothing ever seems to happen, if you see more than half a dozen people in any of the villages, it's a busy day ! We'll make use of local transport and take the afternoon bus back to Trevelez to be reunited with our belongings and spend a third night at our accommodation there. On Wednesday we take our midweek rest day, maybe taking the opportunity to explore the nooks and crannies of the fascinating village of Trevelez, famous for it's delicious Jamon Serrano - the local air-dried hams which can be seen hanging from the ceilings of most of the bars in the area. Other options include taking an early bus to Granada with the chance to visit the Alhambra. Next day we say Adios to Trevelez as we make the climb to an altitude of 2500m for our night at the wonderfully situated Refugio Poqueira on the southern slopes of Mulhacen, the highest mountain on the Iberian peninsula. The refuge provides dormitory accommodation and has hot showers and hot wine - the very tasty vino Caliente. On Friday we leave our mountain refuge and descend into the Poqueira valley for our farewell dinner and a night in a Hostal / Hotel in either Bubion or Capileira to where our luggage will have been transferred from Trevelez. |
